What is “Sports Preparation? Is it necessary? More importantly, is it over-rated?
The sports training and sports preparation opportunities vary from the most basic forms of known sports preparation, to the most extreme known and unknown sports preparation. One supported by Science. The other by Voodoo. How does an athlete determine what is the best choice? This is a very difficult question.
To be a Youth, High School or College, student-athlete, in todays climate, you will need a road map. This will require a complete commitment to achieving the your ultimate goal or goals. Long before you can see the road map, you must know which direction to begin your journey. Once that is determined, your road map must identify valleys, waterfalls, deserts, and mountain ranges, either as dangerous locations or landmarks that identify the correct direction. More importantly, your map must identify where the “safe and fertile land” is located. This is the true challenge. Where can your ultimate goal or goals, be realized and grow. Its location can be revealed. It is determined by the amount of preparation that the student-athlete has completed before the journey begins.
The amount of preparation completed will determine the level of success or failure for the athlete. Therefore , both the student-athlete and family must be educated to the processes needed that lead to the athlete’s level of success or failure. This all starts with selection of “Sports Preparation” – who, what, and where.
Is all sports training “Sports Preparation?
Not all training is “Sports Preparation”! Not all so- called “Physical” training is “Sports Preparation”. Sports Preparation has too many definitions – today! It could be defined as - P90, CORE Fitness, Cross Training, Aerobics, Taebo, and many others. However, all are claiming athletic results, but few prove to be no more than a weight loss FAD or momentary insanity that leads to injuries.
Fortunately, as the science of Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Orthopedics and Chiropractic Therapy improve and their application to the development of “Sports Performance” increases, the application of these sciences have lead to current development of todays bigger, faster, stronger, and more agile athlete. As a result, limiting sports career ending injuries, created from over nite and or mysterious training attempts.
Is it necessary?
Yes. The proper application of these sciences has lead to the greatest athletic talent development and sports performance in decades. As a result, the development of the athlete in todays sports activities will require a “Specialized” form of training preparation. This specialized “Sports Preparation” must incorporate, the knowledge of Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Orthopedics, and Chiropractic Therapy, and their correct application to the sport and the athlete. However, If the uneducated application of the sciences proven to increase sports performance is not done, the results will be injuries that will limit an athletes sports performance opportunities.
Is it over-rated?
You do the math! An athlete (youth, high school, college, amateur, professional) attempting to compete (at any level) without any “Sports Preparation” places that athlete years behind the athlete that participates in “Sports Preparation” activities. You see it all of time. It is as obvious as having a hair cut or not! The athlete that is trained is polished. His or her command of movement, knowledge of the sports or the position, usually is superior to peers. This allows that athlete to continue to be more efficient and effective, as an athlete in the sports and position. Therefore, a stand out amongst his or her peers.
Not all training is GOOD training! Not all training is “Sports Preparation”!
